WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE ON A SYNCHRO TEAM?
Synchronized Skating Team Essay

Coming from all parts of the city, skaters gather together in the Northland before the sun begins to rise or in the evening after a full day of school, to experience the sport of synchronized skating. But synchronized skating is so much more than a sport. To the skater, synchronized skating is fun; it's #1. It’s a true passion – the most influential element in their life. It gives them a huge sense of accomplishment, makes them proud, and puts them in a good mood. You see, the synchronized skater loves feeling the energy circulating through the skaters and realizing the exact movements of the teammates around her.

Even more, the skaters realize the power of the lessons that synchronized skating has taught them. They have learned how to be part of a team and grow as an individual. They have learned to be a stronger and better person. They have learned to unite together and to laugh until they cry. Synchronized skating has taught them the meaning of true friendship, and through synchro, they have made life-long friends. The sport has taught them teamwork, perseverance, and strength. It has taught them how to trust and how to love. Through synchronized skating, the skaters learn how to put differences aside and how to work disagreements out. They learn to work together and not give up, and to be kind and listen. They learn to be the best they can to make the team the best it can be, and that if someone doesn’t understand something then a friend will help them understand. They learn to look up to those ahead and give a hand to those behind.

Synchronized skating is about each other. Whether during the fun of traveling or the intensity of competition, synchronized skaters are there for each other. They are warm and welcoming and become more than friends. They are more like sisters – sisters they grow with, cry with, and rejoice with; sisters with memories of bawling and hugging and performing in front of a crowd.

Friends and spectators can see the speed and twirl of their beautiful dresses, but friends at school have no idea what synchro is. Synchronized skating is about developing amazing muscles, amazing bonds, and amazing relationships with teammates, coaches, and parents. Some things about synchronized skating have to be experienced before they can be understood. For when spectators see the image of 14 bodies out on the ice with all their grace and power, they will never know this amazing sport gave each of those girls such an amazing heart.
